CITY OF PORTLAND POLICE GET MOBILE

Vendor: Seagull

Product: WinJa

The City of Portland, Oregon Police Bureau is enhancing its mainframe application with touch-screen technology and imaging software in a Windows-based PC environment. The new system gives police officers direct access to the bureau’s internal Portland Police Data System (PPDS) from patrol vehicles via a wireless LAN and allows for immediate look-up of criminal records and images to verify identities. Officers are able to access photos in real time at a crime scene and prepare shift reports in their vehicle, reducing the administration and time involved with street-to-office updates.

“Officer safety and public safety are primary concerns. The ability to identify individuals at the scene of a crime eliminates the time spent bringing suspects in to the central booking location, and we can keep more officers on the streets,” said Bill Wesslund, senior IS manager for the City of Portland Police Bureau. “We evaluated several technologies for this initiative and Seagull’s WinJa best served our needs in terms of scalability, strong image processing capabilities, and fast deployment.”

DO IT BEST STREAMLINES B2B COMMUNICATIONS

Vendor: Cyclone Commerce

Product: Interchange Enterprise

Do it Best is streamlining its ordering and supply information with hardware retailers and suppliers. It will initially utilize Cyclone Interchange with 20 of its top trading partners, who account for approximately 80% of the costs attributed to current information exchange methods. Since the Cyclone solution is interoperable with any legacy system, as well as other B2B solutions such as Commerce One, Ariba, and webMethods, the partners can be up and running in a matter of hours or days.

“Do it Best supplies hardware, lumber, and building materials to over 4,200 independently owned member stores, and needs to exchange data quickly and securely with thousands of suppliers on a daily basis,” said James McLauchlin, e-business coordinator of Do it Best. “Because Cyclone’s quickly deployable solution uses open, interoperable standards, we can now work to eliminate cumbersome proprietary communication methods. Moving forward, the Cyclone solution will facilitate the exponential growth of our B2B commerce infrastructure by allowing us to easily add new partners to our network.”
