Internet Crime

Millions of people own personal computers and / or use a computer in their work environment. Most of these people rarely think of the safety of the information they store on their computers or the safety of the computer itself. However, internet crime is rampant in this day and age and is a subject everyone should be informed about. Most internet based crime is somehow related to malicious programs, including viruses, Trojans, network worms, and programs that are written to infiltrate remote computers that are part of a larger computer network.

If someone has access to your computer, he or she could potentially have access to a plethora of your personal information. Think of all the things you do with your computer: online shopping, online banking, bill paying, corresponding with friends and relatives, just to name a few things. These activities may sound innocuous enough, but if a person were to gain access to your computer, he or she could potentially have access to your credit card information, bank account information, home address, business address, phone numbers, social security number, birth date, and the names and email addresses of all of the people you are in contact with. If someone has this information, he or she could obviously easily steal your identity and wreak havoc on your credit cards, bank accounts, and credit rating.

On top of stealing your identity, an internet criminal could use your computer to send spam to all of your email contacts and possibly infiltrate their computers in the process. Additionally, an internet criminal could destroy the data you have on your computer causing you to lose files that are precious and important to you such as digital photos, videos, word processing documents, and music files just to name a few.

Sadly, it is not difficult for internet criminals to find people who will create malicious programs to their exact specifications. There are even online hacker forums where people who write programs for criminal intent offer their services and people who use such malicious programs can search for those who will write these programs to order.

Luckily, there are ways to protect yourself and your computer from internet criminals. First of all, if you have lost data due to a virus or other malicious program attack, there are services available that can easily and affordably recover your data. IntelliRecovery is one such company that may provide this service. Another way to protect yourself is by using any of the widely available antivirus programs on the market. McAfee and Norton Antivirus are probably the two most popular antivirus programs available. Most antivirus programs now offer a suite of services including not only virus protection, but additional forms of internet security such as a firewall and email scanning. You may also wish to install internet protection programs in addition to your antivirus programs such as SpyBot Search and Destroy. These types of programs search for malicious programs that infiltrate your computer and can gather information on anything from your internet browsing history to keystroke entry.
